Performed during his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony, the Proms performances featured on this DVD represent Gennadi Rozhdestvensky at the highest point of his relationship with the orchestra. One of the premier conductors of Russian repertoire, Rozhdestvensky is well known for his interpretations of ballet music - this performance of the second act of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker perfectly demonstrates his affinity with the genre.

The ICA Classics Legacy series presents a collection of historic performances by some of the world’s greatest artists. These performances are released on DVD for the first time, incorporating rare archive footage that has been expertly and lovingly restored.

“The BBC SO is on the top of its form on a DVD including some lively Glinka (the Russlan Overture and three dances from A Life for the Tsar), and the whole of Act 2 of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Gennadi Rozhdestvensky can be an infuriatingly inconsistent conductor, but at his finest he is a magician. This 1981 Prom performance of Act 2 of The Nutcracker is a joy from start to finish: not only is every tempo judged to perfection but the sense of dance, of belletic rhythm, is caught in a way that seldom happens outside the theatre (just listen to the ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ or the final waltz). The playing is highly polished and also wonderfully shaped and characterized. This is a captivating DVD, and both sound and vision are excellent.”

International Record Review - Aug 2011

“One of the advantages of seeing rather than merely hearing a performance such as this is the chance it affords to study the conductor's technique, and Rozhdestvensky's manner throughout the programme is minimal but precisely calibrated. The camera frequently cuts to an inert Rozhdestvensky, apparently doing nothing at all, but he is the master of conveying a world of meaning with a raised eyebrow and his hands can suggest a sculptor at work when he wishes. It's terrific to have... and it's a performance I can imagine returning to often.”
