Rudolf Kempe

Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (8 September 1974, Royal Albert Hall)
-
Dvořák: Symphony No.9 in E Minor "From the New World”
BBC Symphony Orchestra (29 August 1975, Royal Albert Hall)

Deeply felt and masterful, Kempe’s performance of Ein Heldenleben at the 1974 Prom concert was described by the critic Joan Chissell as winning him ‘a hero’s ovation and rightly’. She wrote that ‘no one now before the public is better able to transform Strauss from a plebeian into an aristocrat.’ The performance of Dvorak’s New World Symphony one year later, received equally glowing reviews, and is an illuminating and compelling rendition of Dvořák’s most popular symphony. This is the first DVD of Kempe performing with the two English orchestras of which he was principal conductor for so long.

The ICA Classics Legacy series presents a collection of historic performances by some of the world’s greatest artists. These performances are released on DVD for the first time, incorporating rare archive footage that has been expertly and lovingly restored.

“How absolutely wonderful it is to see Rudolf Kempe, looking hale and fit, ascend the podium and direct an absolutely magical performance of Ein Heldenleben with his usual minimum of podium fuss, his face mirroring both the music’s changes and his obvious pleasure at hearing it emerge the way he wants, the Royal Philharmonic members playing their little hearts out for him.”

Fanfare - Sep 2011

“Fascinating mid-'70s footage of Kempe at the Proms, caught in vintage colour. Famous for his Ein Heldenleben, he is even more illuminating in Dvořák's New World Symphony.”

BBC Music Magazine - Jun 2011

“It offers an opportunity to acquaint or reacquaint oneself with a conductor of the highest calibre, performing live and at the peak of his abilities.”
