Shanghai has been a city en fête for the last six months, hosting the World Expo and consequently millions of visitors from around the world. At the heart of the site are a number of performance venues, and as part of the Italian cultural programme Semyon Bychkov and Filarmonica della Scala gave a concert including soloist Yuja Wang in Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 3. The following day, after a hectic trip, the Orchestra appeared for the second time as guests of Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts. A capacity audience heard a selection of classic Italian works, including Verdi’s Overture to the Force of Destiny, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 6, Pathétique. The partnership between Bychkov and the Orchestra is ongoing and well established; as well as touring all the major cities in Italy it includes concerts across Europe in Athens, Luxembourg, Essen, Bad Kissingen and Ingolstadt. Later this same season a tour of Spain reunites the partnership for four concerts, including Mahler’s Symphony No 6.
